In the Classroom

It’s all about process! Process is the place where the magic happens—the curiosity, the discovery, the problem-solving, and the execution.

My aim as an educator is to help students develop solid creative habits that work to foster growth in the way that works best for them as individual designers, illustrators, artists, and creators. My assignments focus on project-based learning and real-world scenarios. This allows for greater understanding of how to apply their skills to the types of projects they will deal with professionally, and allows for the development of portfolios that will illustrate that understanding to potential employers and clients.

However, I believe it is also important for students to practice creativity for the sake of creativity. To this end, I focus on helping students discover and develop creative routines and practices. I direct exploration into various avenues of inspiration gathering, inquiry, reflection and thinking. I reinforce the notion that practice and play is necessary for growth and understanding. A person’s creative curiosity directly informs their creative work, and the development of effective habits and a solid process makes their ability to tell stories, solve problems, and produce work more natural and more fulfilling.
